The paper tries to generalize the insights into the forming of the Serbian and Croatian standard languages in the first half of the 19th century in order to show:
- the structure of ideological programs of reform of the existing pre-standard written language situation;
- the connection between such programs and the development of ideas concerning the identity and scope of the emerging modern nation, and its attitude toward cultural modernization;
- the discrepancy between ideological solutions for the reform of the written language and the processes necessary for the forming of the modern national standard language.
