Ideological and Conceptual Aspects of the Formation of National Standard Languages

Ljubomir Popović (Belgrade)

The paper tries to generalize the insights into the forming of the Serbian and Croatian standard languages in the first half of the 19th century in order to show:

  • the structure of ideological programs of reform of the existing pre-standard written language situation;
  • the connection between such programs and the development of ideas concerning the identity and scope of the emerging modern nation, and its attitude toward cultural modernization;
  • the discrepancy between ideological solutions for the reform of the written language and the processes necessary for the forming of the modern national standard language.
